Halloween Hoot Cookies aka Eggless Shortbread Cookies Recipe. Yes, this is something the whole family loves. And honestly, what’s not to love, a buttery shortbread cookie, which reminds you of a cute little owl. And G gobbles these up professing her love for them with every single bite. I am always a big fan of this season. And come September, the first day I notice my regular grocery store hauling up their décor to make way for the ghosts and goblins, my heart is filled with the happy anticipation of fall and Halloween and the Holidays and basically, the pace slowing down. Indeed, it is the most joyous time of the year.

However, the most important reason why I love the onset of fall is Halloween. This is the first holiday we celebrated as a family in the US when we landed in St. Louis on a cold October evening in 2004. G was a few months old and being fresh off the boat I could not get her a costume. And that’s a regret I would always have but henceforth, I never miss a chance to celebrate this holiday in its traditional pomp and glory. With the pumpkin carving and the customary visit to Party City, Halloween store and the neighborhood pumpkin patch done and dusted, now I am focusing on the treats part.
Last week I conducted a Halloween cupcake decoration class at home. And the kids loved it and ended the class with a big tray full of treats, which looked spookily cute, if you know what I mean J This week, I baked up a batch of these hoot cookies for Halloween. In fact, I made them last year too. Here’s a picture from last year.
This one is very easy and all you need is versatile cookie dough. And then just use your imagination to churn out these cute and adorable treats. If you are sending treats to school, these cookies are perfect and I can assure you the children will love them. Description
A delicious eggless shortbread cookie which is absolutely spooky and cute. Try out this Eggless Shortbread Cookies Recipe at home.
Ingredients
- All Purpose Flour – 1cup
- Powdered Sugar – 1/2 cup
- Salt – A pinch
- Vanilla Extract – ¼ tsp
- Unsalted Butter – 1 stick ( ½ cup), chilled and cut into cubes
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – To garnish
- Chocolate Chips – To garnish
- Almonds – 8
- Chocolate Frosting – To garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the butter, flour, vanilla and sugar. Mix it in a medium speed till it becomes a coarse meal. This takes about 3-4 mins.
- Scrape off the dough from the sides of the bowl and bring it together in a ball.
- Use a plastic wrap and cover it and store in the fridge for 5 mins.
- Take it out and flatten into a disc.
- Now place it between two sheets of parchment paper and roll into a sheet about 1/4 inch thick.
- Using a circle cookie cutter, cut out the cookies. Gather the left out dough, place in fridge for 5 mins and roll out again and cut the cookies. You will be able to get 6-8 good-sized cookies.
- Now, using a knife, score the wings and feet of the owl. Make two small pea sized balls of dough, flatten them to make the eyes and put a chocolate chip for the eyeball.
- Put the almond for the nose with the tapered end on top.
- Bake the cookies for 12 – 15 mins and they should be slightly browned at the edges.
- Take them out and and you can lightly brush cocoa powder on the scored wings. This kind of gives the owl a 3D effect.
- Pour some soft chocolate frosting in a zip lock bag and snip off the corner. The consistency should be such so that you can write with it. You can out line the borders of the wings, eyes and feet with it. However, this step is totally optional.

It is powdered sugar and the chocolate frosting has to be used after the cookies are baked and cooled.

Hi, my dough is getting sticky while rolling in butter paper, I kept in the refrigerator for half hour. Is there any way I am easily roll and it comes out clean without breaking

Are you using Powdered sugar? Powdered sugar has corn starch which helps the dough bind together. If it is sticky, use an additional 1/4 cup of AP flour.
Is it okay to use icing sugar. As Icing sugar as corn starch.
