“Mom, You ruined my childhood!” said my soon-to-be 13 year old. And I agree that I am guilty!

Well, this year I finally set things straight about Santa. Yes, finally! For the last couple of years as much as I played along with the jolly old man I increasingly found it hard to put up with all the forensic queries that followed his appearance. For example, “Mom, how come Santa has the same handwriting as you?” or “Mom, how come Santa has the same wrapping paper as us?” or “ Mom, we are on vacation, how does Santa know where we are?”

Well, these kids are very smart and G is in such an age and stage of her life where Santa and Christmas is an endearing tradition but somewhere things don’t add up for her. And she wanted to know the truth. So I finally gave in and told her that her mom was designated by Santa to bring her gifts every year. Well, somehow I feebly attempted to offer a nice explanation.

G loves Christmas and Santa and has always been privy to everything that leads up to the old saint’s arrival. She loves making cookies and has been laying them out on the dining table along with a glass of milk for old St. Nick every single year. So somehow I felt she was torn between not wanting to give up on the traditions that defined Christmas for her and yet not really believe the fact that she would see a magical sleigh appear in the sky out of nowhere and have Santa come down the chimney.

What followed was the much-needed conversation between us. I told her that knowing the truth about Santa does not mean that he does not exist. He exists in every person and she would get the proof of it throughout her life. And the Santa that is within her mom and dad is with her forever. No matter what, they would be there for her with open arms all her life. Mom and dad would never fail to have Santa make an appearance through them on Christmas Eve for her till they are there. And it’s also time now that she searches for the Santa within her. Every time she is kind and offers help to another person genuinely, she would find her Santa.

And it may happen that a person she helps does not remember her or acknowledge her going forward. And that’s all right, as she should never help expecting anything in return in the first place. She will find that there would be other Santa’s in her life that would offer her aid in the most unexpected situations and help her overcome whatever hurdle she has been trying to get across. And that is how it is meant to be and that is how she would pay-it-forward.

Somehow she took it well and has been enjoying her winter vacation. In keeping with our annual tradition, here are the cookies that were made for Santa this year. These are frosted Sugar Cookies, and G frosted quite a few of them along with her friend who came over to spend the day with her.
