Our Backyard Makeover Story! You know me as a food blogger but if you follow me on Instagram, you would know that I am a Home Décor enthusiast too. I have a Home Décor profile on Instagram where I upload a lot of pictures of our newly reconstructed home. This year in the summer we got our backyard done. And today I am sharing some of my favorite clicks from a lovely summer evening in our new backyard.
When I was in elementary school and we lived in Shillong, we lived in a bungalow type house. The owner of the house also owned another bungalow just next to the house we lived in and some high-ranking official in the police department would rent that bungalow. That house had a huge front lawn and its residents would host the most lavish parties. And they would illuminate the yard in every possible way. Since both these houses shared a common entryway, we would have a fair portion of our front yard get a makeover in the process too. My bedroom had a huge window facing the open space where the party would be going on. And in spite of the drawn curtains, my room would have some light weakly sneaking in through the nook and cranny. I could also faintly hear the buzz of the music playing outside. I loved that feeling. It’s inexplicable but I grew up admiring the grandeur of our neighbor’s stately parties. Little things but they have such an indelible impact on you. I have always loved going to bed with an imagined gentle illumination of some kind of a light outside. So that would explain the lights you see here and our master bedroom actually opens to our backyard. Just to give you an overview, these are the before pics of our backyard. When we moved in we got the backyard done once. We got slate tiles, got rid of the concrete floor and filled it with a patch of grass, got a pergola and some outdoor furniture. And in fact, I quite loved my backyard even then.
However, when we got the house reconstructed, Sam got it leveled and we started working on a new plan. And here it is for you. This week I have been exceptionally busy especially with Back to School night etc, so this blog is more pictorial. But here is a brief explanation of what we did overall. We got a new deck done in one corner of the yard, this time around we did not go for tiles for the floor and opted for stamped concrete instead, got a custom (made to our required dimensions from scratch and on-site) BBQ island and bar, a new seat wall, two redwood artificial walls, and of course my favorite redwood farmhouse style outdoor table and some black metal chairs from Amazon. We also got a new planter that has a distressed finish and we planted a ton of succulents in it. Pretty much that! But every single thing you see here, the raw material for every single thing was picked by Sam and me. We did not hire any designer and appointed different teams with different skills to get the job done. The vision was mine and the design and execution were done by my husband. We did a ton of research and actually went from store to store to mix and match and get stuff, which went with our vision. Last but not the least, I am posting all night time pics here as this space is curated keeping our entertaining needs in mind, so you must notice the lights. All the lighting has been planned and designed by my husband. All in all a great collaborative project for Sam and me and we love the end result.
